Report on Chilly Castelburn Cockatrice Convivium

On the Eve of last weekend's Castelburn Cockatrice Convivium, the Oracles were prophesying Snow and Ice, and the Baron decided not to bring his entourage on the journey South. The wisdom of this decision was shown by the fate of Guilluame the Unjocular who attempted a journey over the high passes North of Castelburn that evening, but his steed was unable to cope with the blizzard. He was forced to walk down icy paths in dark of night until he was luckily rescued by a party of Sheriffs. Despite the appalling weather, the indomitable folk of the Canton held a very enjoyable and successful event.

The next morning we trekked through snow-covered roads to the Salisbury House Gallery for "The Knowne Worlde Illuminated": a Medieval Exhibition and Events Day, an exhibition of stained glass and other arts and crafts. We served mulled wine and tasty morsels to guests, and displayed our garb and dance, and told of the SCA.

In the afternoon we visited the Library to view it's well-regarded collection of illuminated manuscripts and Books of Hours.

Then back to our rooms at the Carnegie Centre to delight in some tales of Blackadder, and feast on onion and mushroom tarts, apple and walnut tarts, hais balls, spicy sausage and plum sauce, freshly-gathered cockles, roast pork and crackling, roast parsnip and swede, gingered apple, buttered greens, broad beans, ginger cake with apple and cream, and double-chocolate cake, while drinking tankards of the remaining mulled wine.

With the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival canceled, the evening ended early so everyone could be home before the streets became again treacherous with ice. Thanks especially to Ignatius for his organisation and to Maeva for the Feast. The planned events which were unable to be held this weekend, will be re-scheduled for a future date, when the roads are open to travelers from the Southron Gaard.
